"Often the first thing you see of a mule deer is its bright rump; the rest of the animal blends remarkably well into the dry hills. That patch of white is usually the last thing you see as the animal flees over a rise or into a canyon. But sometimes, a big mule buck pauses just before disappearing over the horizon, looking back to see if he's been pursued.
