Frontier Memory is an artistic departure for Daniel Smith, who rarely portrays manmade objects in his work. It depicts a long-forgotten bear trap, hanging from a cabin abandoned a century ago. For a fleeting moment, the trap becomes a kestrel's perch.

Smith writes - "This trap has been a prop in my studio for several years. While I thoroughly enjoyed rendering this massive 20-lb. bear trap, I found it difficult to imagine its original intended use."
