Stephen was a master of capturing the subtleties of firelight on canvas. Here, in one of his most popular images, we experience the lingering embers of last night's campfire. Created as a companion to "A Mountain Campfire", all that is missing from the realism of the scene is the aroma of smoke and the morning's chill. The sun will be coming over the eastern horizon in less than an hour. But, for the moment, there's only a hint of things to come, and the anticipation of a beautiful day in the wilderness.
